Q. What are phytochemicals?
A.Phytochemicals are biologically active compounds found in plants. Out of different classes/groups of phytochemicals, polyphenols and terpenes (B-carotene in carrots) are of interest for us.
Types of polyphenols of importance to us (we will see these in detail later on)
1.Lignans
2.Flavonoids –flavonols (Quercetin, Kaempferol, myricetin), Isoflavonoids (Genistein, Curcumin), flavanols (EGCG)
3.Stilbenes – Resveratrol
4.Phenolic acids – chlorogenic acid
Q. Why use phytochemicals?
A.There are a few reasons, they are as follows –
1.Plant extracts are rich source of biologically active substances that are mild, safe, and effective and are currently among the most common ingredients incorporated into to skin care products.
2.The topical application of antioxidants, including plant extracts -
supports the endogenous defence mechanisms of the skin
reduce UVR-mediated oxidative damage and prevent oxidative stress and its effect.
Q. Are they effective when applied on skin?
A. YES! Topical application avoids “First pass mechanism” and we get more benefit in comparison to oral consumption.
Q. Why cant we just use fruits at home?
A. Various parts of fruits have varying concentration and type of phyto chemicals; it is the knowledge of this as well as knowing how to enhance the potency of certain micronutrients by combining them with micronutrients found in other fruits that makes the difference.
Examples
Apple fruit contain – kaempferol, resveratrol, while, apple seeds contain – ferulic acid which is very potent polyphenol
More Ascorbic acid in orange peel compared to orange fruit
Spanish red grapes are particularly high in resveratrol
Strawberry tree honey is more beneficial from skin care point of view when compared to even Manuka honey!
Q. What is different in our phyto facial as compared to other facials with “natural ingredients”?
A.Following are the reasons as to what is different in what we offer –
1.Various facials that are there in market and that use material containing “natural ingredients” are not as effective owing to volatility/instability concerns (especially Vit C). These “natural ingredients” need to be stabilized using chemicals.
2.In our Phyto-facial we will use phytochemicals and micronutrients extracted freshly, in natural-raw form with NO chemicals added to stabilize them. Absolutely natural, organic, raw form!
3.These phytochemicals and micronutrients that we extract from fresh fruits and plants are cold pressed, unprocessed and satisfy criteria required to allow adequate transdermal absorption (molecular weight is low).
Q. Why choose phyto-facial over other facials?
A.There are various reasons as listed below -
•1. Not everyone wants to undergo harsh treatments like deep chemical peels.
•2. Not everyone can undergo harsh treatments even if they want to as they might have certain contraindications.
